  • Two Suicides in African Literature: Okonkwo in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Kofi Awoonor’s This Earth, My Brother: An analysis

    Abstract

This article examines the theme of suicide as depicted in two seminal works of African literature: Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Kofi Awoonor’s This Earth, My Brother…. Through the lens of narratology and critical theory, it explores the cultural, existential, and psychological dimensions of the tragic deaths of Okonkwo and Amamu. The paper argues that while Okonkwo’s suicide represents the clash between traditional values and colonial disruption, Amamu’s demise reflects the disillusionment of postcolonial realities. Together, these narratives highlight the duality of African literary tragedy, offering profound insights into the human condition. Keywords: African literature, Okonkwo, things fall apart
